The Gorky Institute of World Literature (Institute Mirovoi Literatury - IMLI) is offering two internships to students, scholars and enthusiasts of Russian literature, philology or folklore.
Interns will help edit about 60 pages of draft English translations of scholarly articles prepared by members of the Gorky Institute. In return, IMLI will arrange inexpensive housing in Moscow, and an IMLI representative will expedite any personal research projects (related to Russian literature, philology or folklore) which the intern wishes to carry out, either in the IMLI archives or elsewhere.
The internships (one in June, one in September) last 4-6 weeks. Interns must have native speaker fluency in English and strong English writing skills. Interns must also participate in one of the folklore expeditions sponsored by American Friends of Russian Folklore either before or after the internship.
You will share a Moscow apartment with a family which includes at least one English-speaking member. Cost will be around $300/month. Meals are not included, but kitchen and laundry privileges are.
Knowledge of Russian is helpful, but not required.
A tourist visa is sufficient for access to the IMLI literature and folklore archives. However, the most reliable way to access other scholarly archives is with a scientific-technical visa. With six months’ notice IMLI can sponsor you for a scientific-technical visa.
We also require a letter of recommendation from a professor or equivalent source. Letters should be on institutional letterhead, signed, scanned, and attached to an email message addressed to firstname.lastname@example.org
