Scholarships

We are offering 2 scholarships in 2020, each for $2000. The REEI scholarship is restricted to K-12 teachers, the AFRF scholarship is open to any American citizen or legal resident. Application deadline is January 31, 2020.

REEI K-12 Scholarship

Our $2000 K-12 scholarship, sponsored by the Indiana University Russian & East European Institute, is for K-12 teachers and curriculum specialists working in American schools. Details

AFRF General Scholarship

The $2000 AFRF General Scholarship is open to any US citizen or legal resident, 18 or older. We are especially looking for candidates who will help us to further American understanding of traditional village life. Recipients are required to share their expedition experience in an academic or public setting. Details.

Other Funding Sources for Teachers

Many of our volunteers have received grants from their institutions or other sources. These outside grants commonly go towards travel expenses or expedition fees.

Fund For Teachers

Fund for Teachers awards grants of up to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for teams to take part in professional developments of their choice. Usually the application process starts in October with a deadline near the end of January. Applications are open to all teachers in the US and there is often priority funding for teachers in specific categories, such as those taking part in Math for America or working at New Visions schools.

National Education Association Learning and Leadership Grants

NEA awards up to $2,000 for individuals to take part high-quality professional development experiences, such as summer institutes, conferences, or action research. There are three funding cycles with deadlines February 1st, June 1st, and October 15th. Notifications come on April 15, September 15th, and January 15th. Funds arrive about 6-7 weeks after notification. This grant is taxed if sent to an individual but not if sent to an institution or nonprofits such as American Friends of Russian Folklore. IMLI Internship

In collaboration with the Gorky Institute of World Literature (Институт мировой литературы имени А. М. Горького РАН) we offer a 4-6 week IMLI internship to qualified folklore expedition volunteers. Details.
